HLTAID014- Provide Advanced First Aid
FirstAidPro is an Australian registered training organisation (RTO #40407) that is fully accredited to provide Advanced First Aid training. Our HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid course offers full certification that is nationally recognised. It follows the standards of all the national peak clinical bodies, including Safe Work Australia, the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC), the National Asthma Council, the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA), and the Epilepsy Foundation.
Take your training to the next level by becoming certified in a course that covers not only the inclusions of our standard HLTAID011 Provide First Aid course but also advanced yet common scenarios such as childbirth, crush injuries and substance abuse. Learn how to respond and feel confident in your abilities with FirstAidPro’s capable and supportive trainers and comprehensive courses.
HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid does not require any prior learning to attend and you do not need to be a medical professional either.
Simply book in, complete some pre-reading and attend one of our convenient venues for 6 hours of learning in a traditional classroom environment where you will get to be hands-on, using various apparatus including Manikins and AED’s.
What will I learn in Advanced First Aid?
The Australian government has set up the HLTAID014 training course. It is the industry standard for full, all-in-one training in first aid. The course covers the entire content provided in a standard first aid course (HLTAID011). In addition, it includes more course content, making it one of the most comprehensive first aid training packages available to the general public. The course consists of elements of both practical, hands-on skills and current first aid theory and includes topics such as:
- Taking and assessing vital signs, including normal clinical values (respiration, temperature, pulse, level of consciousness)
- Secondary assessments

You can also expect the training to include the following components:
- A pre-course quiz covering key content from the Advanced First Aid Learners Guide provided in the lead up to the course (the course will build upon this knowledge)
- Interactive, multimedia presentations on the first aid topics covered by the course
- A multiple-choice assessment on the topics covered by this presentation
- Trainer feedback on the results of the assessment
- Detailed demonstrations by the trainer on using key first aid equipment and performing techniques and skills used in first aid
- Trainer led practise using first aid equipment and applying learned skills and knowledge, including question time
- Practical assessment in the form of role plays, observations, written and verbal incident reports, and class debriefs
What are the assessment requirements?
The topics covered by the HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid are pretty varied. To complete the training, you’ll need to demonstrate both your understanding of the course theory and your grasp of the practical skills involved in first aid.
To complete the course and be certified, you’ll need to show you can effectively provide first aid in the following situations:
- An unconscious, non-breathing adult and child (CPR, AED, 2 rescuer CPR)
- A regurgitating or vomiting unconscious adult and child (recovery position)
- An unconscious, non-breathing infant (CPR)
- An unconscious, breathing infant (open airway)
- A casualty with anaphylaxis (ASCIA Emergency Action Plan, Epipen)
- A casualty with asthma (ASCIA Emergency Action Plan, inhaler, spacer device)
- A casualty with non-life-threatening bleeding (bandage dressing)
- A casualty in shock (reassuring them, monitoring body temperature)
- A casualty who is choking (back blows, chest thrusts)
- A casualty who has been bitten by a snake (Pressure Immobilisation Technique)
- A casualty with a fractured arm (bandage, sling)
- A casualty with a dislocated shoulder (cold compress)
- A casualty with a sprained ankle (RICER)
- A casualty with a nosebleed (apply pressure, lean forward)
- A casualty with life-threatening bleeding (tourniquet, haemostatic dressing)
- A casualty with an unknown condition (Secondary assessment, DRSABCD)
- 2 casualties with simultaneous unknown conditions (Basic triage, coordination of resources, secondary assessment, DRSABCD)
You’ll also need to show your ability to do the following either during or following a medical emergency:
- Identifying when to provide first aid
- Following DRSABCD protocol (Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, CPR and Defibrillation)
- Completing incident reports
- Performing a handover to emergency services
What certification will I get for completing the course?
Completing the HLTAID014 course (and the various assessments involved) will provide you with the following nationally accredited training certificates:
- HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- HLTAID010 – Provide basic emergency life support (BELS)
- HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid
- HLTAID014 – Provide Advanced First Aid
These certificates are entirely in line with government standards and accepted nationwide in most roles that require first aid certification. If you find yourself tight on time (such as needing your paperwork for an imminent deadline), you’ll receive your certificate within 24 hours of completing the course. You can download and print them from our online portal.
You should be aware that this accreditation doesn’t last forever – you’ll need to keep it current like any first aid training. The current guidelines from the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) are that you should renew your First Aid training every three years to remain current. The exception is CPR training (HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), which requires a renewal every year!
Course Criteria
There are no preliminary qualifications required to participate in our HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid course. However, there are a few limitations on who can attend.
The course is not available for primary school-aged participants. We require that our students be at least 14 years of age. Additionally, anyone under 18 will need a signed consent form from their guardian before attending class.
You’ll also need to complete pre-reading before the course commences; the time for this will vary depending on your prior knowledge. There is a test on the pre-reading before the hands-on training starts to ensure complete comprehension. The remainder of the course will build on this pre-knowledge.
Lastly, there is a significant physical aspect to this first aid training. To be certified, you’ll need to be able to do the following:
- Perform at least two minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an adult manikin placed on the floor
- Perform at least two minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface
- Operate an automated external defibrillator (AED) to deliver at least one shock
- Provide first aid assistance for several conditions including anaphylaxis, asthma, non-life-threatening, choking, envenomation, fractures, dislocations, sprains, strains, minor wounds, nosebleed, shock, life-threatening bleeding
Gaining a USI
If you’re undertaking any vocational training (not just first aid), it’s now a government requirement that all students have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). This number is required to enrol in any of our courses. It is a number unique to you – the training equivalent of a tax file number.
Unfortunately, while there’s a lot of things that FirstAidPro provides you with when you enrol in our training, a USI isn’t one of those. Just like a tax file number, this is something you have to get for yourself.
Fortunately, the process is free and very straightforward – you need to head to the government USI website. You’ll be able to register a brand new USI for yourself or enter your existing one to look up your information.
How we’re handling Covid-19
FirstAidPro works hard to ensure the safety and welfare of all our course participants.
To attend our courses, you must be willing to:
- sign in at the beginning of the course
- follow current government guidelines for social distancing
- in some circumstances, use personal protective equipment (PPE) such as disposable gloves or face masks
- at some venues be fully vaccinated
If you have any questions regarding any of the above then please contact us at: courses@firstaidpro.com.au.
Course Cost
The cost of participating in the entire Provide Advanced First Aid course, complete with all training materials and certificates, is only $189.
At some times, this price can vary even lower with our daily deals. And of course, if you find an equivalent course out there on the market for a lower price, we’ll match it!
Delivery options
Face to Face Course
6 hours in class
Knowledge + Practical Assessment in class – no online or out-of-class assessment.
The conventional face-to-face course is a one-day seminar covering all course content and assessments (excluding the pre-reading). One of our highly qualified, personable trainers delivers the full-day course with plenty of opportunities for hands-on learning and questions.
Because the course covers so much material, trainers usually start precisely at the posted time – at which doors will be closed and locked. We strongly recommend that participants arrive 15 minutes early – latecomers may have to reschedule for another date.
There will be a pre-course quiz at the beginning of the training, allowing you to demonstrate what you learned from the pre-reading before the course. Doing the pre-reading is essential, as this content will be assumed knowledge throughout the training. The time required for the pre-reading will vary from person to person, but you should generally set aside 4-6 hours to work through the content.
Except for the pre-reading, all other course content – including all assessments – is included in the one 6 hour training seminar. And assuming you successfully complete all assessments, your certificates will be available from our online portal within 24 hours of course completion.
